Aloe Vera - The Healing Plant

•March 2, 2008 • 2 Comments

Aloe Vera PlantMany people are familiar with the healing power of aloe vera for burns and skin abrasions.

This succulent tropical plant has been used for thousands of years to soothe sunburned skin, aid in the healing of cuts, and even as a remedy for severe burns. But its beneficial properties are not solely for the skin. Aloe vera can also be blended into a drink and taken internally to apply its same healing powers to injured areas within your body.

I recently discovered that aloe vera is being used as a remedy for some increasingly common internal conditions lke heartburn, acid reflux and GERD.

And if you think about it, this makes good sense. These conditions are caused by excess acid in the stomach and esophagus — acid which burns the lining of these organs causing pain and discomfort much like a skin burn — and have the potential to lead to much more serious ailments.

Blended with cool water, fresh aloe vera gel can soothe this internal burning just like it soothes burning skin. If you are fortunate to have aloe plants growing in your garden, here is one technique for making aloe ‘juice.’

Aloe Vera ‘Juice’ Soothes and Heals

To make a blended drink of aloe vera, follow these steps.

1. Cut a small leaf from the plant and fillet* it.

2. Thoroughly rinse the flesh of the aloe (gel) until it loses its slippery texture.

3. Blend aloe gel and water (about 6 to 8 oz. of water, depending on size of leaf). I use a hand-held blender, adding cool water from the fridge so it’s ready to drink.

4. Drink it down! The taste is fresh & natural. If you taste any bitterness, you may have not removed all the green outer skin from the aloe gel.

* To fillet an aloe: Using a small sharp knife, cut off the spiny edges on either side. ‘Peel’ one flat side, then the other. For a complete tutorial, visit this webpage.

Dominica Named “Favourite Destination” After Around-the-World Trip

Dominica has done it again — charmed the heart of world-traveller!

Around the World - to Dominica!Alex Boylan, former Amazing Race winner and host of the reality travel-series Around The World for Free has just concluded his travels. After making his way around the globe, travelling more than 45,000 miles in 5 months, he returned to New York exhausted, enlightened, and full of praise for Dominica!

In his interview with CBS reporter Chris Wragge, he said of all the places he had been, Dominica was his favourite destination. He was especially charmed with our natural beauty, lack of mass tourism and local ‘hot’ spots (sulphur pools).

The man he’ll never forget? His name is Screw, the owner of Screw’s Sulphur Spa in Wotten Waven, Dominica.

Going Green in Dominica

•February 8, 2008 • 3 Comments

Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean, is well-known for its stunning natural beauty, verdant green valleys and lush mountainous interior. Dominica also has been called “the Gem of the Caribbean” and “the Water Island”– all monikers which evoke strong sentiments of its natural heritage and the endless possibilities for living in harmony with nature.

Living green in Dominica just got a little bit easier.

In an effort to reduce the use of plastic bags on island and to help keep Dominica’s environment “clean & green” a new cloth grocery bag is now available.

This environmentally friendly carry-all is a top-of-the line cloth grocery bag with many great features:Dominica Green Bag - Click for larger view

Dominica Footballers Do Us Proud!

•February 7, 2008 • 3 Comments

Dominicans came out by the thousands last night to cheer on their National Football Team in the first FIFA World Cup Qualifying Match held in the new Windsor Park Stadium.

Save!
Save!

The steady drizzle of rain throughout the evening did not put a damper on anyone’s spirits. The fans were as ready for this match as the Football team. The first half was marked by a quick pace and exciting play. The crowd roared to their feet as one when Dominica Striker Richard Pacquette scored the first goal at just 20 minutes in. But Barbados was able to equalise just before halftime.

Goal!
Goal!!

The second half brought more severe rain, but the team did not give up. The pace slowed down and as the ball slogged across the wet pitch, neither team could manage the winning goal.

Spectacular saves by Dominica’s Goalie Glenson Prince were the highlight of the match for this football fan - and gets him my vote for Man of the Match!

Dominica will play Barbados in a return match to be held in Barbados on March 26th. See you there!

Monday February 4th, 2008

Carnival King & Queen 2008Dominica’s Carnival celebrations began at 4 am Monday morning with the annual J’Ouvert Celebrations. Although it was a bit cold and rainy at that early hour, many revelers turned out to kick-off The Real Mas.

By the time the Costume Parade began the sun was shining and drying off the streets of Roseau. The King & Queen were at the head of the parade: King Dice and Queen Marah Walter (Photo at left).

Dominica’s 2008 Carnival was full of colourful, vibrant costume bands.

Dice Does it Again! and again, again… #4 for De Dice!

•February 3, 2008 • No Comments

King DiceDennison “Dice” Joseph is the 2008 Calypso Monarch and Carnival King of Dominica!

After finishing fourth in last year’s competition, Dice was back in full strength last night and bang on form. His stunning performances at the Calypso Monarch Competition (held in the stadium) proved that he is still at the top of his game. His songs “Roll de Dice and See” and “On My Own” were clearly crowd favourites, but he also satisfied the Judges’ criteria: Lyrics, Melody, Rendition and Presentation.

Scrunter and Daddy Chess gave Dice a good chase, but despite the overwhelming popularity of Daddy Chess’s “Forward We Go” and the unveiling of his previously un-released second song “Amazing Grace,” he did not manage to out-perform De Dice.

In addition to the ten Calypsonians performing their songs, there were also award presentations made by the Diaspora of South Florida to recognise those who have contributed to the artform of Calypso over many years. Norman Letang, Ossie Lewis and Patrick Pemberton all received plaques to honour their efforts.
